SAN-NAKJI is a unique Korean dish that features octopus served while still alive. The term 'SAN-NAKJI' literally means 'Live Octopus' and originates from the use of freshly caught octopuses from Korea's coastal regions. SAN-NAKJI grows naturally in the marine environment, and the method of cooking them alive to enjoy them more freshly has become widespread.
SAN-NAKJI is typically prepared by cutting into small pieces and then mixing it with seasonings such as soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and chili powder. Alternatively, the pieces can be dipped in a sauce made with sesame oil and salt, or a spicy dipping sauce called CHO-GOCHUJANG. This method allows diners to experience the octopus's liveliness and texture firsthand, with the fresh taste of the octopus blending richly with the seasonings. SAN-NAKJI is usually served while still they are moving, and it's common for diners to pick up the pieces with chopsticks. So even while the meal is in progress, the Live Octopus continues to move, allowing you to see a unique scene right before your eyes.
