Insa-dong is a town where tradition and modernity blend together, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and boasts a long history and rich cultural heritage. Antique shops began to open during the Japanese colonial period, and from the 1970s, galleries, antique framing shop, art shops, and cultural property shops began to gather here. In 1988, Seoul designated Insa-dong as a 'Traditional Cultural Street', and in 2002, it was designated as the first cultural district, making Insa-dong recognized as a representative cultural street in Korea.
Insa-dong has small alleys connected around the main street, and the alleys are lined with art galleries, antique shops, antique bookstores, and traditional craft shops. This place is famous as a place to experience Korean traditional culture, and in particular, about 100 galleries concentrated in Insa-dong display and sell a variety of traditional arts and crafts. For example, ‘TONG-IN Gallery’, a representative gallery in Insa-dong, opened in 1924 and has been a complex cultural and artistic space where old art and modern art coexist for 100 years.
Additionally, there are many traditional teahouses and restaurants in Insa-dong. Among the famous traditional teahouses is one run by the family of famous Korean poet, SANG-BYEONG CHEON. In addition, traditional cultural events, craft exhibitions, and traditional Korean music and dance performances are held on Insa-dong Street. In this way, Insa-dong is a place that tourists by providing an opportunity to deeply understand Korean traditional culture in the middle of downtown Seoul.
