Jecheon, a place with cultural heritage and natural attractions

  • Jecheon

    A city located in the central part of the Korean Peninsula, within the Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea. It's also a transportation hub as it lies at the junction of Chungcheongbuk-do, Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do , with the central highway and east-West highway running through the area. The name 'Jecheon' originates from 'Naeje-gun,' a name used during the Silla Dynasty. It means 'Inner levee,' and during the Goryeo Dynasty, it's called 'Jeju,' meaning 'Village of levee .' Since the Joseon Dynasty, this area has been referred to as current 'Jecheon.' Additionally, the region is known for its historical role in the Korean independence movement, as it's a site of righteous army activities aimed at protecting national traditions and sovereignty during the Japanese occupation.

     

     

    Furthermore, Jecheon's natural scenery is very beautiful. In particular, 'Cheongpung Lake' and 'Uirimji' are popular attractions where visitors can enjoy the natural scenery combining lakes and mountains. Cheongpung Lake is an artificial lake created by the construction of the Chungju Dam in 1985, and it offers a variety of recreational activities such as boat tours, water sports, and biking. Uirimji is a reservoir built during the Samhan-period and is one of the oldest reservoirs in Korea. The area around the lake boasts a beautiful landscape with centuries-old pine trees, weeping willows, and a 30-meter natural waterfall. In addition to these, Jecheon is home to various cultural heritage sites and beautiful attractions, including Bakdaljae Pass and Taksajeong (pavilions and valley resort).

     

     

    Today, Jecheon is a city with a developed tourism industry and cultural events. The Jecheon International Music Film Festival, which has been held since 2005, is the only music film festival in South Korea and has consistently been loved by film enthusiasts and music fans internationally and in Korea for showcasing world-class music films. Additionally, the tourism industry themed on health and healing has also developed. Jecheon has a long history of active herbal medicine cultivation, and it is particularly famous for the high quality of its traditional Korean medicinal herbs. Thus, Jecheon is a city rich in historical significance, abundant natural resources, and tradition.
