Danyang is a region located in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, positioned at the borders of Chungcheongbuk-do, Gangwon-do, and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The history of Danyang dates back to ancient times, and the area was the site of intense competition among the three kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. Notably, Danyang, through which the Namhan-river flows, was the site of crucial battles that laid the groundwork for the unification of the three kingdoms. The name ‘Danyang’ means ‘a desirable place to live ruled by taoist hermit.’
Danyang is renowned for its exceptional natural scenery as the first Geopark in the Chungcheong region. Over 80% of the area is mountainous, so it’s famous for the clear air and numerous pristine valleys. Notably, the 'Danyang 8 Scenic Views' are the most famous tourist attractions, including Dodam-3 bong, Seongmun, Sain-am, Gudam-bong, Oksun-bong, Sangseon-am, Jungsseon-am, and Haseon-am. Among these, Dodam-3 bong consists of 3 towering rocks in the middle of the Namhan-river and has been a favored site of historical figures since ancient times. Notable figures such as Toegye Yi Hwang, Danwon Kim Hong-Do, Gyeomjae Jeong Seon, and Chusa Kim Jeong-Hee included Dodam-3bong in their works. Additionally, there are various limestone caves such as Gosu Cave, Ondal Cave, and Cheondong Cave.
Danyang has developed tourism and agriculture based on the natural environment. The area's geographic features allow for extreme sports such as paragliding and rafting, making it a popular destination. Additionally, the clean natural environment supports the cultivation of fresh produce. Among these, 'Danyang garlic' is particularly renowned for its exceptional aroma and taste, earning nationwide fame. The annual 'Danyang Garlic Festival' attracts many tourists and farmers to the region. Thus, Danyang is a city where beautiful natural landscapes, history, and culture coexist, continuously drawing numerous visitors each year.
