Kwangjang Market stands as South Korea's first modern permanent market and one of the most vibrant traditional markets in Seoul. It originated from a fabric trading center used in military uniforms during the Joseon Dynasty's Japanese Invasions of Korea in 1592. Over the years, it has transformed, shaped by the forces of foreign invasions and modernization. In 1905, as Japan took over the control of Namdaemun Market's management, Korean merchants along with Emperor Gojong established Dongdaemun Market in Jongro. Though officially designated 'Dongdaemun Market,' its proximity to Cheonggyecheon's Kwanggyo and Janggyo bridges earned it the widespread nickname 'Kwangjang Market.'

In 1897, new stores and companies were established along the street from Jongro to Dongdaemun. Of course, during the Japanese colonial period, the Jongro commercial district encountered historical challenges. Despite this, Korean merchants persevered, embracing modern business practices. Consequently, from the mid-1910s, Jongro Street was adorned with modern buildings and signs contructed by Koreans. The traditional marketplace evolved, giving way to fabric stores, Western-style outlets, general stores, and tailor shops. Furthermore, the more prominent marketplaces established 'companies'.

Kwangjang Market, with its extensive history, remains a vibrant hub in its bustling alleys to this day. Particularly famous as a food market, it enjoys popularity with the younger generation.
